Welcome to Lifelong Learning at Wofford Spring classes begin the week of March 13. > Clubs, Events and Trips > Clubs

Clubs

Our clubs are a fun and unique way for members to get to know each other outside of the classroom. Clubs are created by members for members and are free to join and participate. Sometimes a club will decide to go to a winery or movie together and there may also be costs to buy books or wine or rent movies online. You can choose to attend all club events or pick and choose. No one is taking roll! Currently, our clubs are only active during our two eight-week terms in the Fall and Spring. Joining puts you on a roster so that you can be reminded of events and provided with additional information from our volunteer hosts.

Join Dave Whisnant, Ana Maria Wiseman, and other movie buffs to watch and discuss movies that relate to a theme. Film Club meets online on the third Tuesday of every month at 4:00 p.m. via Zoom starting in September to discuss films that you have watched prior to the Club date. If you can't make all the club meetings, no worries. If you want to see just one movie, that is OK too. If interested, register yourself for the WoCo LLL Film Club so we can stay in touch. No pressure. This is a fun group of folks who engage in some great discussions!

This year we will view and discuss eight movies that center around cooking and food. Good meals can be magical. They can help build and strengthen relationships, teach us about other cultures, or simply remind us of home and family. The movies we have chosen are a feast for the eyes and are guaranteed to make you hungry! The first six are:

    • Eat, Drink, Man, Woman, Sept 20
    • Like Water for Chocolate, Oct 18
    • Julie and Julia, Nov 15
    • Babette's Feast, Jan 17
    • Chocolat, Feb 21
    • The Lunchbox, Mar 21
    • Big Night, April 18

Wine Club continues to be held via ZOOM on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 4 p.m. during terms so that friends from around the country can join us for the fun. Register for this club if you want to be notified with reminders and notes about the wine tastings each month. Join every monthly session or just join one, the participants in this group are laid back and always willing to raise a glass in good cheer. Before each monthly online meeting, you will receive a list of wines that will be tasted so you can purchase and have them on hand for the Club's online tasting.

Thursday, Mar 16 – (Zoom) Tuscans and Super Tuscans. What do we mean when we talk about Tuscan wines? How are they made? What makes something a super Tuscan?

Thursday, April 20 – (At Bond Street Wines) Trends in wine: organic, biodynamic and sustainable wines, unexpected origins, orange wine. Jeff House will teach us about environmentally friendly practices and what effect they have on the wines, and address some of the trends that he has identified in wine-landia.

(Attention – the 2nd Thursday of May) Thursday, May 11 – (Zoom) The other side of the mountain. All wine is not produced in an AVA or an Appelation d’Origine Contrôlée, or a Denominazione di Origine Controllata but there are wines that are grown either literally right next door to these more valued regions. We propose to taste a few wines that are grown “on the other side of the mountain” or “right next door” to these star regions to appreciate quality, difference, and similarity in taste and price.
