Managing the Detective Unit (Online)   

This is an independent study, self-paced course.

This course focuses on the effective and efficient management of detective unit personnel, procedures, and investigations in order to improve organizational processes and increase clearance and arrest rates.

The objectives of this program are two-fold: one addresses the administrative requirements for managing the criminal investigative process; the other focuses on managing the operations of the investigative unit. We will examine several strategies, policies, and forms that are designed to make the management of the investigative unit more effective. You will learn efficient and productive techniques and systems enabling you to better control personnel, paper flow and daily job routines.

Audience

Sworn law enforcement personnel, new detective unit supervisors or commanders, veteran supervisors given an investigative command assignment, patrol supervisors who aspire to a position in command of an investigative unit.

This course is restricted to sworn and non-sworn law enforcement personnel.

Online Details

Online environment: This is an independent study, self-paced course. Although there are no specific times that you must be online, you will be required to complete assignments by the deadlines posted within the course. Instructors are available to answer your questions during each module via the help forum.

You should plan to dedicate approximately 24 hours to the course activities. You must be committed to the course and invest the time necessary for successful completion. The course must be completed within 30 days upon registration. Once the 30-day period has ended, you will no longer have access.

Computer requirements: You will complete the course entirely online. A dependable broadband internet connection with a Windows or Mac computer and Adobe Acrobat Reader (free download) are required.

Schedule Changes

Registration and Fees

Full payment must accompany all registrations. You may register online and pay with your Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express credit card, or you may download a Registration Form and mail it to IPTM with a check.

Cancellation/Refund Policy

Complete the Cancellation Request Form and return it to IPTM. No telephone cancellations will be accepted. A 20% administrative fee will be assessed to all refunds if the cancellation request is received within 14 days of the course start date. In lieu of a refund, student substitutions can be made or a credit can be issued for a future course. No refunds will be given for no-shows. If materials for an online course were sent to the student, the appropriate materials and shipping costs will be deducted from the refund amount. Materials may be returned to IPTM in their original condition at the student's expense. Once IPTM has received and inspected them, the refund will be processed.

Due to the automated format of online independent study courses and Videos on Demand (VoDs), no refunds or substitutions can be made after registration.

Course Confirmations

A minimum number of registrations must be received for an in-person class to run as scheduled. When the minimum criterion has been met, written confirmation will be emailed to you. Please do not travel or make airline reservations until you receive written notification confirming that the course will run as scheduled.

Most locations are served by several major airlines. Transportation, food and lodging are the responsibility of the student.
