Presented by the Horry County History Museum
Did you know that the Carolina Bays in Horry County are the only place in South Carolina you can find Venus Fly Traps growing wild? Carolina Bays are elliptical depressions housing temporary wetlands surrounded by sandy rims. The origin of these dense and marshy depressions have been debated since being brought into the scientific spotlight thanks to aerial photography of the Myrtle Beach area in the 1930s. What isn’t up for debate is the unique and familiar wildlife that call the Carolina Bays home, including multiple species of carnivorous plants. Join Horry County Museum Curator, Abigail Geedy, to learn more about the wildlife of Carolina Bays.

When the United States entered World War II in late 1941, many citizens from Horry County answered the call to service. In addition to the men and women who left home to fight far away, Horry County also served as a training site for pilots and housed a German Prisoner of War Camp. Join us to learn more about these sites and their continued impact on the area today.
From iconic landmarks to lesser known places, join us as we talk about the lost buildings and sites that were once important to the citizens of Horry County.
This presentation will examine the many ways that rivers, canals, and railroads shaped the history of North America. It will consider the role that rivers played in early settlement and in subsequent conflicts (e.g., the French and Indian war, the Mexican American war, and the Civil War). It will examine the role of canals in the expansion of commercial agriculture and the primacy of New York as the nation’s leading seaport. It will describe the emergence of railroads and their momentous impact on politics, the economy, society, and population shifts.
