    Rice, History, and Waterfront Charm

    Join OLLI for a relaxed and enriching day in historic Georgetown, where learning, leisure, and coastal beauty come together in one thoughtfully planned excursion. This experience begins at the Rice Museum, where participants will explore how rice cultivation shaped the economy, culture, and landscape of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Through engaging exhibits and guided interpretation, members will gain insight into the region’s agricultural history and the people—free and enslaved—who played a role in building Georgetown’s legacy as a major rice-producing center.

    Following the museum visit, members will enjoy a leisurely lunch on their own at one of Georgetown’s popular waterfront restaurants, offering scenic views along the Harborwalk. Participants will then have time to stroll the Georgetown Harborwalk, browse local shops, and take in the charm of one of South Carolina’s oldest coastal towns. This excursion is designed to feel organized—but never rushed, providing a comfortable pace with a balance of learning, social time, and exploration.

    Departure Time:  Please arrive by 8:15 a.m. The Coastal Carolina Univsersity van will depart promptly at 8:30 a.m. and cannot be delayed. (Return approximately 5:00 p.m.)

    Meeting Location: Coastal Science Center, 301 Allied Drive, Conway, SC 29526

    Activity Level: Moderate- includes walking through museum spaces and navigating stairs within the historic structure, including access to upper levels of the building. Participants should be comfortable climbing stairs and standing for periods of time during the visit.

    History, Heritage, and Lowcountry Charm Along the Santee River

    Join OLLI for a rich and immersive day in the South Carolina Lowcountry at Hopsewee Plantation, where history, culture, and tradition come together in one unforgettable experience. This full-day excursion begins with a guided tour of one of the region’s most well-preserved 18th-century rice plantations, offering insight into the architecture, economy, and complex history of plantation life. Participants will explore the stories of those who lived and labored on the land, gaining a deeper understanding of the Lowcountry’s past.

    Following the tour, participants will enjoy a relaxing Southern lunch or tea experience at the charming River Oak Cottage Tea Room, a signature part of the Hopsewee visit.

    Beyond the Bin: The Hidden Journey of Your Recycling.

    Did You Know? The Horry County landfill is currently the highest point of elevation in Horry County, and long-term planning is essential as the site moves toward future capacity needs. Join OLLI for an educational (and surprisingly fun) behind-the-scenes tour of the Horry County Solid Waste Authority’s recycling operations right here in Conway. This guided experience takes you inside the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) and the Recycling & Convenience Center, where you’ll see the real process behind “reduce, reuse, recycle”—including how materials are sorted, processed, and prepared for reuse.

    As the Coordinator of the Recycling Program likes to say, once members load up in the "SWA" van, you can sit back and take in the journey of recycling—watching the systems, machines, and teamwork that keep our community cleaner and more sustainable. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of what belongs in the bin, why recycling rules matter, and how modern landfill and recovery systems help protect local land and water.

    Arrival Time: Please arrive no later than 9:45 a.m. (“SWA" Van boards at 9:55 a.m. and departs promptly at 10:00 a.m.)

    Activity Level: Easy – Minimal walking; participants ride as a group with short, guided viewing stops

    A Quiet Retreat for Reflection, Nature, and Spiritual Discovery

    Discover the serene beauty of the Meher Spiritual Center, a peaceful retreat nestled along the Intracoastal Waterway in Myrtle Beach. Established in 1944, the center is dedicated to the teachings of spiritual leader Meher Baba and welcomes visitors from around the world seeking quiet reflection, inspiration, and connection. During this guided visit, participants will be introduced to the history and purpose of the center while exploring its tranquil grounds, including meditation spaces and shaded wooded paths.

    Along the way, members will learn about Meher Baba’s message of love, compassion, and service, and experience the calming atmosphere that makes this location one of the Grand Strand’s most unique and meaningful destinations. This excursion offers a rare opportunity to step away from daily routines, slow down, and engage in a peaceful and reflective environment.

    Time: Participants should arrive by 8:30 a.m. to meet; the tour will be begin promptly at 9 a.m. and conclude at 11 a.m.

    Meeting Location  & Transportation Information: Participants will meet at: Myrtle Beach Mall 10177 N Kings Hwy, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572. Due to limited parking at the Meher Spiritual Center, participants will consolidate into approximately four vehicles before departing for the Center, specific meetup and parking instructions will be provided prior to the trip.

    Activity Level: Low to Moderate – The tour includes visiting three historic buildings and several scenic nature sites on the property. Participants will be getting in and out of vehicles at multiple stops and walking over uneven terrain, with some stairs involved. For comfort and safety, please bring water, bug spray, and wear sturdy closed-toe shoes. The tour will last approximately 2 hours.

    Join OLLI for a vibrant and interactive morning at the Myrtle Beach Art Museum, where creativity and learning come together in a truly engaging experience. This thoughtfully designed program begins with a guided exploration of the museum’s galleries, where participants will view a dynamic collection of artwork across multiple mediums including painting, sculpture, and mixed media. With 11 rotating galleries featuring regional and national artists, each visit offers something new and inspiring to discover.

    Following the tour, members will transition from observers to creators during a hands-on art activity inspired by the artwork on display. Participants will explore the technique of pointillism—using small, deliberate dots of acrylic paint to build a complete image—guided step-by-step in a relaxed and supportive environment. No prior art experience is needed, just a willingness to try something new and enjoy the creative process. This experience blends art appreciation with personal expression, offering a meaningful opportunity to engage with both the visual arts and your own creativity.

    Meeting Location: Myrtle Beach Art Museum Meeting Information: Participants will meet directly at the museum. Parking is available on-site.

    Activity Level: Low – includes light walking and standing during the tour, followed by a seated art activity.

    Grow, Learn, and Thrive—Discover the Power of Sustainable Living

    Join OLLI for a refreshing and educational visit to Outside Alive Farm, a community-focused urban farm located in the Socastee area of Myrtle Beach. This engaging experience invites members to connect with nature while exploring practical approaches to sustainable living and local food systems. During this guided visit, participants will learn how the farm operates using environmentally conscious methods, including organic growing techniques, soil health practices, and seasonal planting. Members will gain valuable insight into how small-scale farming supports healthier lifestyles and strengthens community wellness.

    In addition to exploring the gardens and growing spaces, participants will have the opportunity to meet the sanctuary's animal residents, visit the barns, and experience daily life on a working farm. The visit concludes at the on-site Farmer’s Market, where members may browse and purchase fresh produce and locally made items.

    Activity Level: Moderate – includes walking on gravel, mulch pathways, and natural surfaces throughout the farm. This is a working farm environment with uneven terrain, including gravel and mulch pathways. Closed-toe shoes are required

    Important Note: Participants will be required to complete a waiver prior to the tour; forms will be distributed and collected by the OLLI Coordinator upon arrival at the farm.

    Go Beyond the Glass—Discover What Happens Behind the Scenes

    Join OLLI for an unforgettable all-inclusive experience at one of Myrtle Beach’s most fascinating attractions. This unique excursion combines exclusive access to a working marine research facility with time to explore the aquarium at your own pace. The day begins with a guided visit to the Marine Science Research Center, where participants will step beyond public exhibits and into the world of marine animal care and conservation.

    This off-site experience offers a rare opportunity to learn how aquatic animals are housed, monitored, and studied. Depending on current activity, members may observe species such as sharks, stingrays, and sea turtles while gaining insight into rehabilitation efforts and ongoing research.

    Following the guided experience, participants will return to Ripley’s Aquarium for a self-guided tour, allowing time to explore exhibits such as the shark tunnel, coral habitats, and interactive displays at a relaxed pace. This all-inclusive experience offers a powerful combination of education, access, and exploration, making it a truly memorable OLLI excursion.

    Arrival Time: 10:30 a.m.  Behind-the-scenes Tour promptly starts at 11 a.m.

    Meeting Location: Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach, 1110 Celebrity Circle, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577. Participants will meet at the front entrance. Parking is available at Broadway at the Beach.

    Activity Level: Moderate – includes walking, standing, and transitioning between locations.

    Join OLLI for a nostalgic and engaging visit to Wheels of Yesteryear, where a passion for classic American automobiles has been transformed into a remarkable public experience. This unique museum features an extensive private collection assembled over decades by dedicated collectors who share a deep appreciation for the history and craftsmanship of American-made vehicles. What began as a personal interest has grown into an impressive showcase of over 150 classic cars and trucks, each carefully preserved and presented for visitors to enjoy.

    From early models to mid-century classics, each vehicle reflects the innovation, style, and engineering that defined its era. The museum’s layout allows for a relaxed pace, giving members the opportunity to view each vehicle up close, read historical information, and engage in conversation about the memories and milestones these cars represent. This excursion is perfect for those who appreciate history, engineering, design, and nostalgia, offering a unique glimpse into America’s automotive past.
