- Fairy Tales and Their Tellers
-
In this class, we will look at old tales, their tellers and illustrators, and transitions from spoken to written literature. Fairy tales, a.k.a. magic tales, are very old and both stable and shapeshifting. People have enjoyed them in cartoons, Victorian nurseries, peasant huts, and even courts like Versailles. The original, oral forms of magic tales are violent, coarse, and sexually explicit. Sometimes governments, priests, or schoolmarms compelled changes. Sometimes, writers. There will be nine tellers with at least nine tales sent to class members.
This class considers different tales each term. Anticipate increased attention to illustrators and the history of books this term. Tales to expect this term include "Beauty and the Beast," "The Fisherman and His Wife," "The Emperor's New Clothes" and a tale from One Thousand and One Nights.

- Jug Band Music
-
"Jug Band: a band that uses primitive or improvised instruments (such as jugs, washboards and kazoos) to play blues, jazz, and folk music" (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). We'll gather once a week to explore the history of jug bands, and to sing and play jug band songs. This class is less about musicianship, and more about exploring the roots of this great American art form. We'll listen to 1920s and 1930s recordings, and trace jug band influences on modern day music. Then we'll recreate some old-time music!
Although experienced acoustic players are encouraged, you don't have to be a musician to be part of this endeavor. Bring acoustic string instruments, rhythm instruments, and a jug if you have one; or just bring yourself. There will be a basket of rhythm instruments, a bag of kazoos, and a few additional items to use.

This class is the first in a planned four-class sequence based on Yuval Noah Harari's Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind. Together, the sequence follows the long arc of human history from the origins of the universe to the modern scientific age. This course focuses exclusively on part one of Harari's book, prehistory from the big bang to the threshold of the agricultural revolution. The purpose here is to explore the evidence underlying the starting point for Harari's story of how evolution produced an unremarkable primate – that's us, Homo sapiens – that sort of by accident came to dominate the planet. Throughout the class, particular attention is given to separating well-established evidence from interpretation and informed speculation.
This class from OLLI at the University of Arizona will be recorded. OLLI-UA recordings can take up to a week after the class meeting to become available.

Rachmaninoff and Chopin are two popular classical music composers. Both were concert pianists in their own right and spent much time on stage drawing very large crowds. Their fame, however, was generated by their composing, which has found its way into the standard classical repertoire. Both had difficult times politically with Rachmaninoff falling into disfavor with the Bolshevik revolution in Russia and Chopin obtaining more artistic freedom leaving his native Poland for the more appreciative culture and lifestyle of France. Besides performing, both have had their music regularly included in many motion picture soundtracks.
This class from OLLI at the University of Arizona will be recorded. OLLI-UA recordings can take up to a week after the class meeting to become available.

Many of those words and phrases are so ingrained in our lexicon that we are oblivious to the potentially manipulative power they hold over us and our way of thinking.
