In just over one hundred and fifty years - 1543 to 1704 - a series of great minds transformed the way we think about nature - and, in doing so, laid the intellectual foundation for modern society. Happily for us, the key figures in the Scientific Revolution - Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Descartes, Newton, etc. – were also wonderfully eccentric individuals! This course will explore their "distinctive" personalities as well as relishing the beauty and excitement of their transformative ideas.

Roger presents a fascinating program on the history of the land the State Botanical Garden occupies as well as the surrounding nearly 2,000 acres. The narrative spans 250 years from when William Bartram viewed the North Oconee River in 1773 to the creation of the Botanical Garden in Athens. He will share information about the three generations of the White family who owned the land. This is the family that created the mill village of Whitehall. You will learn how the property eventually came to be a part of UGA.
