Hobbies and Crafts   

You must be signed in and a current annual member in order to have access to register for any of our courses or clubs. Many of our social and special events are open for non-members, but all courses have member-only access. Scholarships for class fees are available for students once they join as an annual member.   • A Time to Knit

    New knitters and experienced ones this is the class for you. By the end of class our new knitters will learn how to complete a dishcloth. For our experienced knitters our award-winning instructor will offer help with projects not yet completed or will help start you on a new project. Beginners should bring a size 8, 29-inch circular needle and a skein of 100% cotton yarn. Craft stores Joanne’s, Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc., all carry needles and yarn. The best way to knit is with old and new friends.

  • ONLINE COURSE  Baking Whole Grain Sourdough Breads

    The course is accessible to anyone interested in beginning to bake or improving skills. We'll have 4 projects using durum, spelt, light rye, and khorasan (aka kamut) flour grains all dating back to the early days of collective human living. The course will be done via Zoom permitting you to work in the comfort of your own kitchen. We will have a YouTube channel where I post videos of the steps of each recipe and I'll also provide sourdough starter to anyone who needs one. Participants will need to have on hand the following kitchen equipment for baking - baking sheets or baking stones or a Dutch oven; flours; bowls, cloth to cover breads while they rise; bread baskets (for shaping and rising); rice flour; bowls for mixing and rising; a small kitchen scale to measure quantities of flour, water, salt etc. The instructor will provide the 4 recipes via email and will post them to YouTube.

    The basics of "Party Bridge" will be taught as we sit at 4-person tables and learn to play as we go! There will be lots of laughter, occasional frustration, and the joy of learning a new activity.

  • Homemade Notebooks - Beginning bookbinding

    Learn how to stitch homemade notebooks out of things you have around the house. We will use paper shopping bags, used manila folders, craft papers, decorative napkins, bits of fabric, decorative papers and other elements to make simple, fun, useful books to take notes, keep souvenirs, or give away as presents. We will explore basic bookbinding techniques such as stitching and folding to make four notebooks.

  • Oil Painting- A simple approach to realism

    This class will consist of step-by-step instructions on how to prepare your canvas, composition design, how to control the oil paint, how to load your brush, underpainting, painting accuracy, and what brushes to use. Preparation is a big part of this class and is crucial for successful oil painting. We will be looking closely at some of the techniques used by some of the masters that used classical painting methods. This class is ideal for beginner or intermediate-level artists.     There is a $10 Oil Studio Fee that will be added to your cart when you register for this class.

  • Play Better BlackJack

    Since this course has filled up in previous semesters, I am offering it again. It is designed to teach the best choices at blackjack to be able to either win or be a "tough out" at the tables. All are welcome with no prior experience necessary. We will cover all aspects of blackjack including proper decisions while playing, casino personnel, tipping, comps, and money management. Card counting is not taught but is explained. Practice play with real chips is a fun part of the course!

  • The Anatomy of a Landscape

    This indoor course will focus on the components of landscape paintings to help students plan, paint and mix color better. For example, how does one paint a tree? paint convincing tree holes, bark, and leaves? paint convincing water and reflections? create depth in a painting? What does it mean to “push” color? How does understanding color theory improve one’s painting? We will be referencing and dissecting successful landscape paintings to create and improve our own painted works. 

    This class is 2 1/2 hours long. Students are responsible for providing their supplies. The list of materials needed for the class can be found HERE Please be aware that buying cheaper materials will affect the quality of your final projects.

    If you ever dreamed of painting with watercolors, this is the class for you to try it out with others at the same level. No special artistic talent or drawing skills are necessary. Just be able to hold a brush, hear and follow directions. Nothing to buy.
