  • Drawing Pencil Portraits with Bailie

    In this class, students will learn how to transform favorite photos into beautifully rendered pencil portraits using Bailie's own "Drawing Without Lines" technique. Those students already familiar with this technique will build upon their skills; new students will be introduced to the technique at the beginning of the course. Students should bring several photos from which to work each week. As this is a course where skills will build upon one another, it is important for students to commit to being in class each week. Students will be given a list of supplies to purchase before the first class. Supplies will cost less than $30.

  • From Attics to Archives: Understanding and Preserving the Past

    The Spartanburg County Public Libraries will provide all materials used to demonstrate preservation techniques. Students are required to bring materials from their personal collections including images, clippings, letters, etc. Students will receive guidance on when these materials are used during a session. SCPL will provide sample material if a student does not have access to personal items. SCPL will take responsibility for all aspects of this course including the cost for class materials. Wofford will handle all registration. Each course is held at the Downtown Library. Students will participate in a walking tour which includes approximately 5-7 city blocks.There will be field trips taken during the term.  During COVID and as directed by the CDC and SCDHEC - all participants MUST wear a mask and be able to maintain a physical distance of 6 feet.

    Do you want to take better photos? It is a learned skill. Join Paul Halphen in a quest to learn what makes a better image, how to understand photography concepts, what functions of your camera can help you improve your images, and to practice what you learn. The class will include 8 Zoom classes (or in person, if conditions warrant), at least 3 field trips, and references to books, useful on-line links, and other information to help you continue learning. Still trying to decide whether to take this class? Then flip through these images to see what kind of pictures you could take under Paul's direction and guidance.

    • An introductory course surrounding the game of Pickle ball. Pickle ball is a paddleball game that takes parts from tennis and ping pong. We will cover general rules, history, strategy, equipment and actively participate in the rapidly growing sport of pickle ball. All classes will meet on a court and there will be no homework or tests given. All students will have the option to participate in playing the pickle ball game, but it is not required to attend this class in person. This is a one hour class.

    New and experienced gardeners are welcome as the class explores topics such as home landscapes, growing bulbs, propagation, container gardening, water-wise gardening and more. Classes will be taught with multiple lectures, except for portions of the propagation section of class. This is a one hour class that meets for 6-weeks

    Grab your sketchbook and let's hit the streets of Spartanburg! A class for beginners through the seasoned artist, we will spend the first two classes indoors learning perspective, shading and how to draw what you "see." The last six classes we'll roam the streets sketching architecture and street scenes. You'll also learn to splash your sketches with fast and loose watercolors.
