While only annual members can attend our classes during the academic year, we invite non-members to register for our summer classes. This opportunity is in addition to special events and trips, which are open to all students year-round. Summer term is a great time to see what Lifelong Learning has to offer if you’re new to Spartanburg or to our program. Annual memberships will be available for purchase between August 1, 2025 and March 20. Benefits of an annual membership run through June 30. 

Note: Annual members receive $10 off any class during the summer term. Special events are excluded from this offer.

  • Backyard Wildlife

    Students will learn the identification and natural history of common backyard flora and fauna in the Upstate of South Carolina. Emphasis will also be placed on how native plants, pollinator gardens, pocket prairies, and landscape features benefit wildlife in your yard. Classes will consist of two days of lecture and two days of hikes at natural areas in Spartanburg. Hikes will not be strenuous, but students should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain at places such as the Cottonwood Trail.
 

  • Mahjong: Around the Tiles

    Learn the game of American Mahjong, as well as the game's history and cultural significance. In this interactive class, we will learn about the tiles, the 2025 National Mahjong League Card, game play, and how Mahjong encourages storytelling and shared experiences. *Please note: a different instructor will be teaching Mahjong rather than the instructors who taught in the fall, winter, and spring.

    We'll be painting a lovely floral still life with watercolors. The student will practice watercolor techniques of saving whites and lights. Prior watercolor painting experience is required. This class meets one time only during the first week of Summer Term. Registering for the "Section 2" class is not required. Supply list for the class 

     

    This is a one-time, three-hour section.

    We'll be painting a lovely floral still life with watercolors. Working from a photo reference, the student will practice watercolor techniques for edges and shading to the enhance the illusion of depth in the painting. Prior watercolor painting experience is required. This class meets one time only during the second week of Summer Term. Registering for the "Section 1" class is not required. Recommended art supplies. 

     

    This is a one-time, three-hour section.
 

  • Photo and Sightseeing Trip to the Western Carolinas Mountains

    A photo and sightseeing tour in the mountains of the Western Carolinas. This will be a one-day tour on in the Wofford van. The trip will leave at 9:00 am and return at 4:00 pm. We will monitor the road situation in the mountains to select the optimum places to visit which are accessible and will provide easy walking/hiking and good photographic opportunities. We expect to be able to include some waterfalls and wildflowers in addition to landscape vistas. Please bring your own bag lunch. The cost of the class includes the cost of the provided transportation. 
    Rain date is June 20 at 9:00 a.m. If the event is postponed due to rain, no refunds will be provided if you cannot attend on the rain date.
 

  • Puppetry Can Teach Morals and Entertain

    Let's learn about puppetry! In this class, you will learn how to make puppets and will share ideas and stories about this fascinating subject. You will learn the art of ventriloquism--the creation of an audiovisual illusion, and you'll write a script for talking with your puppet. If you have a favorite puppet, bring it to class! The instructor is an experienced ventriloquist and will illustrate how he uses puppetry to teach morals in the community. 
 

  • Texas Hold'em for Beginners

    Instructor: Katherine Wakefield
    This is a beginner class on how to play Texas Hold'em Poker. It includes the language of poker (there is a lot), hand rankings (what beats what), mindset, and playing styles. Students will learn how to deal the cards, and how to strategically play this game that goes beyond luck but involves skill to play your cards right. The first two classes will be slides and information about poker; in the remaining classes we will put our learning into action by playing the game. This class is open to anyone wanting to learn the most popular version of poker in the world. Students will not be gambling but learning how to play the cards and strategy. 
    This class is held on Wofford's campus.
