The goal of this course is to demystify artificial intelligence through hands-on exploration, practical applications, and thoughtful discussion about benefits and risks. Participants will build confidence using AI tools while developing critical thinking skills to stay safe online. By the end, each participant will have created something meaningful using AI and will understand how to integrate these tools wisely into their daily lives. Students need a working laptop, a working and accessible email address, and a notepad to take notes. All reading materials are free resources that will be assigned weekly.

This course introduces homeowners to the electrical systems that power their homes. Students will follow electricity from the generating station through the transmission and distribution system and into the home. The course explains electrical safety, service panels, circuit breakers, grounding, receptacles, switches, lighting, GFCIs, AFCIs, fans, HVAC systems, appliances, energy conservation, and basic troubleshooting. The course is designed for understanding and safety—not to train students to perform hazardous electrical work.

We’ll cover a wide range of topics, including how to protect your devices from scammers, spammers and viruses. Each week, we’ll explore the essentials of using computers and laptops, tablets and smartphones, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices, and popular social media platforms. We’ll also learn how to create strong passwords, set up passkey accounts and keep everything organized. In addition, we’ll look at the differences between major web browsers and how to choose the one that best fits your needs. Please bring your smartphone, laptop or tablet to class—your questions are always welcome! If you have taken previous Tackling Technology or Basics in Computer/Smart Devices class(es), you are welcome to take this one as well—similar material will be covered, but information will be updated.

Every now and then an invention appears that is world-altering. Quite often there are interesting, unexpected, and seemingly unrelated events that culminate in the final innovation. In this course, we will explore through lecture and interactive discussion some of the stories and personalities behind a few of mankind’s greatest inventions, including golf balls, microwave ovens, cameras, radar, and television.
