    Join us as we have a guided tour of Hatcher Gardens.  This beautiful free garden located in the center of Spartanburg is truly a gem.  Learn the history of one man's dream to turn a drainage ditch into a lovely garden in the city, accessible to everyone. The garden has grown and changed over the last five years and we will meet the team responsible for the expansion.  The lead Horticulturist, Danny Shook and his able staff will lead us on our walk and explain about each plant. The registration fee includes lunch that will be provided to the group after the tour to enjoy in the gardens.

    • Are you ready to start a new exercise regime? Looking for a way to wake up your body? Join favorite instructor Julie Ward on a journey into total body movement to enhance your quality of life, give you an opportunity to take charge of your body and bring it to its full potential. This class requires full body movement, loose fitting clothing and supportive shoes are recommended. All levels of physical abilities are encouraged as exercises can be adapted.

    New knitters and experienced ones this is the class for you. By the end of class our new knitters will learn how to complete a dishcloth. For our experienced knitters our award-winning instructor will offer help with projects not yet completed or will help start you on a new project. Beginners should bring a size 8, 29-inch circular needle and a skein of 100% cotton yarn. Craft stores Joanne’s, Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc., all carry needles and yarn. The best way to knit is with new friends and a great instructor!

    Byron McCane will offer a four-week look at what archeology is and how it uncovers so much more than centuries of sand. Dr. McCane will focus primarily on archeology in the Middle East, with a spotlight on Israel. After introducing the discipline and an overview of studies in Israel, Byron will look at archeology related to Herod the Great, Caesarea Maritima, The Temple in Jerusalem and Herod's Fortress on Masada. He will explain how archeology complements ancient texts and how, when coupled with other disciplines, it sheds a brighter light on historical events.

    This course will focus on the cultural curiosities of life in Germany. There's more to the country than beer and Bratwurst, more than castles and cuckoo clocks.  We'll skim over some history, then take a look at things Germans do that might seem odd - or charmingly unique - to Americans. As James Michener said:  "If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion, and avoid the people, you might better stay home." If you want to travel but not quite ready to get on a plane, then come learn about Life in Germany.

    Join Chumley Cope for a special backroads adventure into the North Carolina Foothills, as we explore local history and hidden gems of Polk County. Discover fascinating sites and stories, great natural beauty, and cap it off with a tasting at a unique local winery. Our driving distances will be short, and you’ll find plenty of inspiration for future exploration in the area. This guided day trip includes comfortable transportation, activities, lunch, and a wine tasting! Students must be fully vaccinated to participate on this trip. 

    This day trip will depart from outside Central United Methodist Church. Participants will be contacted by email two weeks prior to departure to confirm the details of the day trip and our departure plan.  Adventure awaits!

    June 10: Have a family graveyard that has fallen in disrepair? Or walk by a cemetery in your neighborhood and see it needs some attention but don't know how to get started? This event will take place in the graveyard at the Episcopal Church of the Advent on Advent Street in Spartanburg. Participants will get an overview about the different types of environment, stone, construction, typical damages and how to clean, repair and restore them. This event is being offered two different days: June 10 and June 24.

    Mr. Terry Connorton, Airport Director, will discuss the history behind the Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport which is the City of Spartanburg's largest owned asset. He will also talk about the four types of aircraft served there and the economic impact of the airport to our city and region. Students will meet at the airport for the tour. More details about the meeting location will be provided after registration. LLL Member Adair Watters is the host of this class.

    • Have you ever walked into a casino and wondered why there is so much excitement at the craps table?  This is your chance to join the fun!  Have you been intimidated by all the chips and bets?  This course aims to teach the basics of craps in a logical, step-by-step fashion.  No experience is needed. Each session will consist of a lecture (with interactive discussion) followed by practice play with real casino chips on a craps table layout. This class puts the fun into lifelong learning!

    • We will meet for three sessions for this course and will be novices together in creating starters and doughs for French and Italian flatbreads that lend themselves to being grilled. The weekly projects include focaccia, ciabatta, and fougasse. Potential participants may certainly use their ovens if they do not have access to an outdoor grille.

    • We'll be exploring some of the sites that played a major role in the development of this area's culture and history including Spartan MIll Village area, Anderson Mill, the Price House and the Williams Place, Blackstock Battlefield, Glen Springs,  Pacolet and Cowpens. We will stop and explore on foot along the way at various locations in these different communities and for bathroom breaks.  Lunch at The Mustard Seed (in Woodruff) and bottled water is included in this event. Participants must be fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus to ride in the touring van. 

 

 

 

  • The Battle of Britain - 1940

    In the late summer of 1940 Britain stood alone.  The German army, assisted by the Luftwaffe, had rolled roughshod over the Low Countries, Norway, bypassed the famous Maginot Line, captured France and forced the British Army into skulking off the continent at "Dunkirk";  All that stood before the Germans was the Channel, the navy, and the R.A.F.  In four classes can  750 fighters of the R.A.F. turn back the might of the 3000 Luftwaffe aircraft? You will have a chance to command the squadrons on a 12' x 6' war game. Classes start each week with a brief history to set the stage for the battles and then students will engage in their own battles with ships and planes and rules of war engagement. An exciting class to learn hands on about the Battle of Britain.

After the tour, which should last 60-75 minutes, we'll go inside to talk about some of the important milestones in the college's history, followed by lunch. Whether you're a Wofford graduate, a friend of the college, or new to Lifelong Learning, this walking tour is a one of a kind experience led by our expert historian.
