    • A journey into total body movement to enhance the quality of life and give the participant an opportunity to take charge of their physical equipment and bring it to full potential.     This is the dramatic story of the Transcontinental Railroad. Tunneling by Chinese immigrants and grading and rail-laying by Civil War veterans linked Omaha and Sacramento and authenticated our “Manifest Destiny”. Heroes: Lincoln and Theodore Judah. Villains: Thomas Durant and Collis Huntington. Victims: American Indians whose Great Plains resources were destroyed. We will remember 20th century railroading and show the diminished state of passenger rail in the United States today.

  • Drawing Pencil Portraits with Bailie

    In this class, students will learn how to transform favorite photos into beautifully rendered pencil portraits using Bailie's own "Drawing Without Lines" technique. Those students already familiar with this technique will build upon their skills; new students will be introduced to the technique at the beginning of the course. Students should bring several photos from which to work each week. As this is a course where skills will build upon one another, it is important for students to commit to being in class each week. Students will be given a list of supplies to purchase before the first class. Supplies will cost less than $30.

  • From Attics to Archives: Understanding and Preserving the Past

    The Spartanburg County Public Libraries will provide all materials used to demonstrate preservation techniques. Students are required to bring materials from their personal collections including images, clippings, letters, etc. Students will receive guidance on when these materials are used during a session. SCPL will provide sample material if a student does not have access to personal items. SCPL will take responsibility for all aspects of this course including the cost for class materials. Wofford will handle all registration. Each course is held at the Downtown Library. Students will participate in a walking tour which includes approximately 5-7 city blocks.There will be field trips taken during the term.  During COVID and as directed by the CDC and SCDHEC - all participants MUST wear a mask and be able to maintain a physical distance of 6 feet.

    • An introductory course surrounding the game of Pickle ball. Pickle ball is a paddleball game that takes parts from tennis and ping pong. We will cover general rules, history, strategy, equipment and actively participate in the rapidly growing sport of pickle ball. All classes will meet on a court and there will be no homework or tests given. All students will have the option to participate in playing the pickle ball game, but it is not required to attend this class in person. This is a one hour class.

    Covert Actions have been pursued frequently by the United States since the end of World War II. These have involved clandestine activities both of a military and political nature in which denial of US involvement was possible diplomatically even if not credible in reality. We will examine some of the better known covert actions with regards to justification, result and impact on both US foreign affairs and Executive-Congressional relations.

    When most people think of F. S. Fitzgerald, they think of The Great Gatsby, but throughout his career he made most of his income publishing short stories. We'll read one of his major stories for each class; our text will be Babylon Revisited and Other Stories. We'll discuss the themes and the interesting connections between the stories and his life, we'll watch video clips of his biography, and we'll admire his ability to capture the social history of America in the 20's and 30's. Students will be required to purchase, or borrow from a library, Babylon Revisted and Other Stories by Fitzgerald for this course.

  • Tin Cans: Workhorse of the U.S. Navy in WWII

    During WWII, U.S. Navy sailors on destroyers affectionately called their 2,000-ton warships - "TIN CANS." These sleek, agile warships were armed with 5" guns, many anti-aircraft guns, torpedoes, and depth charges.  As the war progressed, these sailors knew that their warships would be called upon to protect convoys crossing U-boat infested waters of the Atlantic Ocean.  In the Pacific theater, DDs would sail "In Harm's Way" off Guadalcanal and Okinawa. DDs were the workhorses for the U.S. Navy.

    Parts of Matthew’s gospel are found nowhere else in the gospels; parts of Luke’s gospel are found nowhere else in the gospels. These "M" and "L" sources contain many beloved passages in the New Testament.
    The goals of this study are (1) to discover how these writings fit into Matthew and Luke respectively, (2) to study “M” and “L,” letting each one stand on its own feet and (3) to appreciate the wealth of good news found in these sources.  Note: This class starts a week later than most Spring Term classes. It begins March 15 and runs until May 3.

A class for beginners through the seasoned artist, we will spend the first two classes indoors learning perspective, shading and how to draw what you "see." The last six classes we'll roam the streets sketching architecture and street scenes. You'll also learn to splash your sketches with fast and loose watercolors.

    For Vietnam vets and interested folk this will be a wide ranging look at a war that still haunts our country. We will delve into the decay of French colonialism,  the fall of France in 1940, Japanese occupation and our  OSS, British recovery and rising  civil strife, French re-occupation and military defeat, McCarthyism and  the Tonkin Gulf, U.S. involvement, Nixon, anti-war protests and Kent State  all ending with our frantic exit.  Attendees can sit comfortably at  home and, if so desired, participate with comments and questions. No readings, no tests, just a quiet relaxed learning experience.
