Group Travel

Since Wofford Alumni and our community is full of Lifelong Learners and others who love to travel we have connected with Premier World Discovery, Explore Up Close and Jocassee Lake Tours to offer some amazing trips for the Spartanburg Community. Group travel means the majority of participants on our off term trips will be in some way connected to Wofford as a friend, alumni, interested traveler or member of Lifelong Learning.

Regarding Premier World Discovery trips:  You will not register for the trip through Wofford but will register directly through Premier World Discovery using our unique Group Booking Web code that is provided in the description. Premier World Discovery only offers trips to groups, unlike other travel companies you can only join their trips through one of their partners, which includes Wofford's Lifelong Learning program.  If you have any questions regarding their trips,  contact Premier World Discovery at 877.953.8687. Be sure to have the Booking web code on hand and the name of the trip you are inquiring about. All other questions may be directed to Lifelong Learning at Wofford (864-274-2917).

  • Heartland: Exploring Central Georgia's Mystical Stories and Places - Double Occupancy
  • Price: $5,024.00
    Date: 3/2/2026 -- 3/6/2026

Double Occupancy Section: Georgia is the Southeast’s biggest state. Only Texas has more counties. And how much of that vastness (not called Atlanta or Savannah) is shrouded in mystery? If the wealth and influence of the pre-modern world was based on agriculture, the connectivity of roads and trade, and “relationships,” then Georgia’s currency ran deep. The beauty of exploring swaths of the Southeast today (including Georgia’s heartland), is that those “big stories” from the hazy past are still there, lying fallow in a gorgeous, rolling countryside; and in quaint county seat towns. Let’s explore central Georgia, and uncover a surprisingly rich array of stories: spanning early settlement and encounters with the Creeks; Georgia’s political elite; and even shifting state capitals. We’ll spend two nights in Milledgeville, on the Oconee River (vital to its location); and two nights at Callaway Gardens, framed by Pine Mountain. Our small roads driving route will uncover the legacy of Moses Waddell – tutor of Presidents; Georgia’s music and literary stars (including Flannery O’Connor’s Andalusia Farm); FDR’s Warm Springs story; Indian Springs and the story of Creek Chief William McIntosh; and more. We’ll meet local experts with stories to tell. We’ll drive lovely rural routes. We’ll enjoy comfortable lodging; and savor local food and drink.

This price is for two participants so find a buddy to room with and then register together. Price includes (per person): chartered coach transportation, driver gratuity, four nights accommodation with breakfast in comfortable hotels (including two nights at the Callaway Gardens Resort), all touring, breakfasts, three lunches, and two dinners, concierge/guide service throughout the trip. Alcohol is not included in the trip price; trip insurance (not included) is recommended.

Site visits and stories will include:

    • Willington, SC – home of the Willington Academy
    • Hickory Hill – home of Congressman Tom Watson
    • Milledgeville, Georgia capital from 1811 – 1869
    • Glen Mary Plantation
    • Andalusia Farm, home of Flannery O’Connor
    • Callaway Gardens
    • The Hills and Dales Estate
    • FDR’s Little White House / Warm Springs, GA
    • Indian Springs Hotel
    • Georgia Writers Museum

“Our rural and small-town touring will present a vivid picture of how Georgians live . . . and lived. A picture of the real world, neither commercialized nor ‘curated.’ Our adventure will amount to a discovery.”  -Chumley Cope, Explorer and Founder of Explore Up Close.

No refunds will be provided within 45 days of the trip.
