- EarthCaches in Tiger Canyon NEW!
-
Fee: $59.00
Dates: 5/22/2024 - 5/29/2024
Times: 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Days: W
Sessions: 2
Room: Off Campus
Instructor: Bob Carson
Seats Available: 8 out of 15
An EarthCache is much like a Geocache: using a phone app, you can track down the coordinates of a site to find a hidden treasure. But unlike traditional Geocaches, the treasure at an EarthCache site is not a container full of objects - it's a unique geological landmark, plus a community-developed lesson approved by the Geological Society of America. In the first session of class, students will learn about local geology and be taught how the EarthCache system works. Then, the following week, we'll take a day-long field trip up Tiger Canyon, visiting five EarthCache sites. The last stop will be a hike (less than two miles roundtrip) through native plants to a hilltop with a panoramic view of the Palouse Hills and the Walla Walla Valley!
5/22 class session is from 4-5pm. 5/29 class session is from 9am-5pm.
Students will carpool to secondary locations. All students must sign a field trip liability waiver before the start of class in order to attend. Upon enrollment, a link to the waiver will be included in the order confirmation email.
Required Materials: smartphone; boots; raingear; sun protection; backpack; sack lunch; snacks; 2 liters of water in reusable bottles.
Suggested Materials: binoculars; camera; $5 of gas money (for your carpool driver).
Note that there will be no restroom facilities during the field trip portion of class, so prepare accordingly.
On 5/29: Arrive a little early! The group will meet in the main WWCC parking lot, in front of the Dome/Gym. We will depart at 9:00am.

The Juniper Dunes Wilderness Area is one of the most interesting environments in the Walla Walla region... especially if you know the best places to look. On this trip, we will enter the Juniper Dunes through a remote back entrance - one that's accessible only a few months out of the year but provides access to the largest sand dunes in the shortest distance. We will hike approximately 2.5 miles across both soil and sand, exploring this unusual environment, before eating lunch atop a dune.
Students will carpool to secondary locations. All students must sign a field trip liability waiver before the start of class in order to attend. Upon enrollment, a link to the waiver will be included in the order confirmation email.
Required Materials: lunch; water; backpack or bag; sunscreen; hat. High-topped walking or hiking shoes (to keep out the sand) recommended, but low tops will work.

Broadway musicals always seek to entertain - but some musicals also seek to shine their bright lights on the social, cultural and even political issues and concerns of their day, many of which are still relevant even now. This class will take a closer look at the messages of five Broadway musicals from different decades that still manage to brilliantly entertain their audiences with song, dance, and (usually) a happy ending: Show Boat; South Pacific; Cabaret; Chicago; and Kinky Boots. We will watch not only full recordings of each show, but also video analyses of their messages and themes - plus engage in thoughtful class discussion. Students will gain a better appreciation of these messages and how they can be so effectively communicated through the art form of musical theatre.

Sessions: 5
Room: HLTH SCI (E) Perf Art Aud 1732
Instructor: Claire Valente
Hollywood has always been as fascinated by Shakespeare as the rest of us. Over time, the ways in which Shakespeare plays have been filmed has changed dramatically (pun intended). We'll watch a number of Shakespeare films. We'll laugh, we'll cry, and we'll try to understand how movie makers have used Shakespeare for their own purposes over the years.
With over 525 films giving him writing credit, William Shakespeare is the most adapted-for-film author of all time. The 1990s in particular saw an explosion of Shakespeare movies – in large part due to the influence of Kenneth Branagh – that milked big-budget production values and star power alike. We will watch five Shakespeare films: the 1995 Othello starring Laurence Fishburne and Kenneth Branagh; Richard III (1995) starring Ian McKellen; Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet (1996); A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999) with Kevin Kline; and – perhaps the most famous "knock-off" attached to the Bard – Shakespeare in Love (1998). We'll ponder why Shakespeare appealed to popular audiences of the late 20th century and how his eternal messages were translated for that decade.
