Instructor: Larry Moen
Fee: $20.00
Sept. 10, 17, 24, Oct. 1
If you can sign your name, you can draw. What prevents us from drawing is less about our "artistic" abilities than simply some things our brains do to generalize our thoughts. In this course we'll learn how to shut that down and draw what we actually see. Most students who've taken this course before have been amazed at how quickly they are able to do drawings they feel good about. Drawing is fun, you're more able to do it than you think, and we'll have you doing it in four short weeks. Come join in! Materials fee $35; pay instructor at first meeting. Enrollment limited to 14.
Instructor Larry Moen provides art/creativity therapy as a licensed professional counselor in his private practice Uncommon Therapy (https://www.utherapy.net/). Previously he has been acting coordinator of the counseling center in Utqiagvik, manager of rehabilitative services at Fairbanks Community Behavioral Health Center, treatment director of Children's Services on the North Slope, Dean of Students at Ilisagvik College, and the creator of the social skills curriculum used by Job Corps.

- SCI-03 The Variety of Bird Migration Strategies
-
Dates: 9/13/2024 - 10/4/2024
Days & Times: F 10:30 AM - 11:45 AM
Number of Meetings: 4
Building: UPark 158
Instructor: Ed Murphy
Fee: $20.00
This course is FULL, and the Waitlist is CLOSED.
Sept. 13, 20, 27, Oct. 4 (IN PERSON)
We’ll explore the great variation in migration behavior of birds, from those who travel repeatedly to the same small patches of land to breed and/or winter to those who travel to far different locales from one year to the next. First, we’ll discuss the variety of techniques used to study bird movements and then evidence for various compass senses that birds may use to navigate on long migrations. Are individuals outside their normal seasonal ranges making navigational errors or successfully colonizing new areas? Finally, we’ll examine the global biology of birds across the world making long non-stop flights without refueling. In-person enrollment limited to 26.
Instructor Ed Murphy, Professor Emeritus; taught ornithology and natural history courses during his 30 years at UAF and for OLLI the last several years; his research has focused on the ecology of Alaskan birds.

Session I: 9/13/2024 - 10/4/2024
Days & Times: F 3:45 PM - 5:00 PM
Number of Meetings: 4
Building: UPark 156

Join UAF oceanographers on photographic tours of life at sea, aboard research vessels large and small. We will follow research expeditions to the Gulf of Alaska, the Alaskan Arctic, the Northwest Passage, and the North Pole. The research investigates the effects of climate change and the numerous factors that maintain Alaska’s biologically productive marine waters. Along the way, learn how the scientists and marine technicians maintain and deploy autonomous underwater vehicles, ship-tethered water samplers, and oceanographic moorings that collect sensor data and physical samples year-round.
Instructor Seth Danielson’s research seeks a more complete understanding of the mechanisms that regulate high latitude continental shelf ecosystems, with particular emphasis on drivers of environmental and ecological structure and variability. He will be joined by guest lecturer Hank Stats.

Before this course is complete, you will become a volunteer in a local elementary school classroom. You will be paired with a teacher (perhaps your grandchild's teacher). Prior to your first experience, the instructor will introduce behavioral norms expected around students and teachers, plus common features of a modern FNSBSD classroom. Please don't register for this class if you are already a volunteer, a substitute or a retired teacher. The goal is to help new folks get into the classroom: people who want to help our students, teachers, and schools, but need a little support and encouragement getting started. Enrollment limited to 16.
Instructor Tom Baring volunteered in his own children's schools starting in 2004. He made a midlife career change into teaching in 2011 and, after earning his K-8 certification from UAF, taught for 10 years in the FNSBSD. After retiring in 2022, he returned to the classroom again, as a volunteer.
