Athens’ JG Beacham Drinking Water Treatment Plant transforms raw water into clean, great-tasting drinking water, then conveniently delivers it to taps at homes and businesses. This is the only drinking water treatment plant in Athens-Clarke County and provides approximately 14 million gallons to the city daily through a span of 800 miles of pipes. Raw water is sourced from the North Oconee River, Middle Oconee River, and Bear Creek Reservoir. During this tour, you will learn how raw water is processed and how the facilities are maintained by our operators.

Many have heard of church leaders who resisted the Nazi regime—names such as Bonhoeffer and Niemöller still inspire. But what of those who did not resist? How could so much of the German church, steeped in a rich Christian tradition and a deep intellectual culture, come to embrace Hitler’s vision? Drawing on Robert P. Ericksen’s Theologians Under Hitler, this five-week series examines how the Deutsche Christen (“German Christian”) movement and eminent theologians such as Gerhard Kittel, Paul Althaus, and Emanuel Hirsch bent Christian faith to serve Nazi ideology. Through presentation and discussion, we’ll consider how faith became an instrument of nationalism and hatred, and the sobering lessons this history still holds.

Historical narratives are simplifications but necessary ones. Otherwise, as one 19th century English scholar put it, “History becomes just one damn fact after another.” This course will focus on two of the grandest of all historical narratives. First, in the history of ideas, is the long and tortured road from the essentialist thinking of the ancient Greeks to modern existentialism. Second, is the development in recent decades of so-called Big History, which sees ALL history—natural as well as human, and from the Big Bang to current events—as a product of a common evolutionary process. Hold on to your hats!

- REGISTRATION FOR THIS CLASS IS CLOSED. This class is already in session.
This writing course is structured as an Action Class… well, as much action as a writing class can be. The instructor plans to solicit one or two students to serve as project guinea pigs. Guided by the instructor, the class will actively begin the process of turning the selected students' source material into memoirs. Each session will begin by sharing samples—written examples, and potentially a short video or two—from prominent memoirists or other relevant sources. Attendees will share selected portions of their writing for discussion and analysis. Homework will be assigned. The class will then move into the active process of turning the two chosen diaries or journals into memoirs. This process will incorporate advice from the instructor, the authors, and the entire class, thereby providing students with practical pathways toward doing the same with their own source material. There may or may not be lollipops.
