Indian cuisine is diverse, fresh and flavorful, and not very well understood in the U.S. In this lecture, Nupur will transport you to India with a slideshow featuring pictures and stories that illustrate seven aspects of Indian cooking, for instance, how Indian home cooking is different from Indian restaurant food, and what Indian cooking can bring to your own home kitchen. You will learn how to make a cup of authentic chai and enjoy your chai with a selection of snacks and sweets, just as you would if you were a guest in an Indian home.

When Ebola or COVID break out, news sources say, "Scientists' maps predict the disease will spread in these places first." How do health officials know this? This class is an introduction to Geographic Information Science (GIS) and to some ways it's applied in health fields to predict and control disease. Maps also tell a story about the long-term health effects of political and economic decisions. We’ll look also at which maps and data are easily available online that can help you understand important facts about where you live now, like issues of water quality, crime, flooding, toxic waste, etc.

This session will feature a variety of techniques that Chris Greer uses to find unique compositions and capture landscapes in ways that viewers appreciate and remember. He will talk about the gear he uses, his approach to finding locations and good light, as well as the things he thinks about out in the field and also when he is doing my post-processing. There are many images that he plans weeks or even months in advance, and others that are captured with a fair amount of serendipity. He will also talk about his PBS show “View Finders,” which chronicles the adventures of two photographers in search of beautiful locations to photograph. Chris wrote and photographed the best-selling book, View Finders, upon which the PBS show is based.

This course will explore the 18th-century botanist and artist William Bartram's journey through the southern Appalachians in May of 1775, along with Bartram's life and historical significance. Bartram is considered America's first environmentalist, and his 1791 publication, Travels, provides us with one of the only ecological and cultural portrayals of the southern landscape on the eve of the American Revolution. It was highly influential in the early 19th-century Romantic literary world. We will also discuss the 112-mile long Bartram Trail and its many notable features and botanical highlights.

Mexico's film industry has long been one of the world's largest and most vibrant, giving the world glamorous stars, timeless popular songs, and enduring images of stark yet beautiful landscapes, social struggle, and triumph over adversity (though not without a few melodramatic plot twists along the way). This class gives an overview of Mexican cinema from its Golden Age of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s to the experimental and often political Nuevo Cine Mexicano of the 1960s and 1970s through the industry's decline and resurgence in the twenty-first century with contemporary classics like Y tu mamá también.

The BBC/PBS series The Hollow Crown (2012) adapted four sequential Shakespeare English History plays in mini-series style. We’ll watch the series and (ideally) read the Shakespeare plays (Richard II, two parts of Henry IV, and Henry V). We’ll ponder Shakespeare’s nuanced and rueful look at leadership and the price to be paid for different leadership styles. The opulent series stars Jeremy Irons, Julie Walters, Tom Hiddleston, Judy Dench, and an A-List of British actors. Please watch the first episode before the first class, the second before the second, etc.
