Many of us born in the United States tend to take our rights as U. S. citizens for granted. Legal permanent residents looking to become U. S. citizens have to take a civics test as part of their immigration services interview. What if each of us had to take a citizenship test every year to remain a U. S. citizen? Would we be able to pass? American Civics 101 is a timely five-part discussion that provides a simple but comprehensive path to understanding what every person applying for U. S. citizenship today needs to know… how our U. S. government is supposed to work!

Jonathan Swift is best known as the author of the sharply satirical Gulliver's Travels, but he was also a poet. Among his most interesting poetic works is a series of birthday poems addressed to his longtime friend and companion, Esther Johnson, whom he called Stella. The poems, focused on friendship and the passage of time, range in tone from the gently satirical to the deeply heartfelt. This class will provide biographical background against which to read and interpret several of these poems as they reveal the emotional side of the typically-acerbic Swift.

This presentation examines Athens' first Botanical Garden. It was Antebellum Athens' most admired amenity and flourished from 1832 to 1856. The eight-acre garden was developed along Tanyard Creek by Dr. Malthus Ward, M.D., UGA's Professor of Natural History. Visitors remembered it as "a Garden of Eden, a paradise." The creek was transformed in the "natural style" into "a splashing waterfall, with a placid little lake, winding walks, shady dells, boats, bridges, a small greenhouse, and plant beds of exquisite beauty." When the garden was closed and the property sold, the proceeds funded the University's cast-iron fence and The Arch.

To most of us, driving means freedom, independence, and the ability to go where and when you want. Aging may change how and when we drive. By observing our personal changes, we have the opportunity to adapt our driving skills, our driving choices, and our safety. Sometimes the right decision is to retire from driving. But if we maintain our physical health, drive a safe car, and learn to compensate for aging, we are likely to remain in the driver’s seat longer. Learn how aging impacts our driving and tips on keeping safe while driving, and discuss options when we retire from driving.

Machu Picchu was built in the late 1400's and then abandoned by the Inca. The Spanish did not know about it. It was "discovered" by Yale professor Hiram Bingham in 1911, and the National Geographic Society sponsored his return in 1912 and devoted an entire issue of the magazine to Bingham's second expedition. This amazing story combined with images of the presenters' tour from Lima to the small Inca town of Urubamba and then Machu Picchu will be shared.
