While few people make a living from practicing the craft, there is a vibrant community of hobby lacemakers around the world. This lecture/demonstration class will cover the history of bobbin lacemaking, an explanation of the tools used, and a survey of several types of bobbin lace. A handout of information and resources will be provided.

The aim of this class is to turn you into an Aristotelian! The Aristotelian view of nature is often derided as simple-minded by students of the modern scientific revolution. In fact, it was a brilliant synthesis of much of the best natural philosophy before the modern era. The Aristotelian world-view is relentlessly rational and coherent and is in many respects the true foundation of modern science. It is also interesting and delightful in itself. P.S.: The Aristotelian world-view provides an excellent—and often amusing—way to explain the natural world to your younger grandchildren!

Go behind the scenes at Five & Ten for an inside look at how an independent restaurant operates. This interactive program will explore the economics of restaurants, local sourcing and seasonality, menu development, hospitality, and the realities of running a modern dining room and kitchen. Participants will hear from the chef and pastry team, observe a butchery demonstration, discuss how relationships with local farmers shape the menu, and conclude with a seasonal lunch while continuing the conversation. Celine Song’s Past Lives (2023) is one of the most impressive independent movies of the 2020s. While 2023 was dominated by the blockbusters Barbie and Oppenheimer, over 100 critics declared Past Lives the best film of the year. It won many prizes, from the American Film Institute and Sundance to the Director’s Guild of America. It was championed as “a master class in storytelling” on Ebert.com. Based on a personal story of Celine Song’s, Past Lives follows Nora (Greta Lee) who leaves South Korea as a child, and later struggles to become a playwright in NYC. But she left a close friend, a boy, behind. What does that relationship mean now, years later? This class will revisit Past Lives to evaluate Song’s richly developed characters, script, and visual style.

Travel virtually to places like Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and Muscat, Oman, through the lens of an American who has lived and worked in the region for nearly a decade. Moving beyond headlines and stereotypes, the class examines the rhythms of daily life, cultural values, and social structures that shape contemporary Gulf societies.
Drawing on the presenter’s lived experience in the United Arab Emirates, students will be introduced to the nuances of cultural adaptation, language learning, and cross-cultural communication in a rapidly evolving region. Topics will include identity and belonging, the balance between tradition and modernity, and the role of music, language, and interpersonal connection in understanding culture from within.
Rather than a geopolitical or policy-focused approach, this seminar emphasizes human experience and cultural immersion, encouraging participants to reconsider assumptions and engage with the Arab Gulf through a more grounded and personal perspective.
