From 1820 to 1970, many Athenians lived above Hancock Ave downtown in homes ranging from small cottages to impressive mansions mostly dating to the 19th century. In the 1960s this vibrant neighborhood was swept away in Athens' largest urban renewal project, clearing hundreds of buildings between Pulaski and the Oconee River from Hancock to the CSX tracks. Drawing on extensive photographs and documents in the Hargrett Library, Athens Magic Lantern will lead you on a virtual stroll through what were some of the oldest residential streets in Athens, revealing a way of life that just isn't the same as Greek Revival Cobbham.
