What happened to Linnentown, a thriving African American neighborhood in Athens which is now the site of three dorms? Presenters will show a 20-minute documentary on the 1962 urban renewal policy used by the city and university to force Black homeowners from their homes, resulting in what economists estimate to be a loss of $5M in generational wealth. We will explain how UGA researchers identified 11 of these homeowners and their living first descendants. Participants will discuss what is owed these descendants, issues surrounding reparation movements around the country, and Athens Reparations Action Inc.’s plans for direct reparations payments.

Church and religious organizations create multiple records which are essential tools in family history research for the United States and across the water. These records can provide clues about birth, death, marriage, burial, migration, national origin, and much more. Records kept by religious entities put families in a place at a time along with context for that place and time. This three-hour class will be an overview of how to find these records, why to use them, including hands-on exercises during the class period. Handout and homework will be sent in advance of class.

This class will investigate some of the controversies surrounding glyphosate, the world's most widely used herbicide. There is a wealth of mainstream research and factual information to indicate that glyphosate has a favorable safety profile for the environment and for human health, especially when compared to other herbicides.
In some instances, the use of glyphosate can have environmental benefits: Its use allows no-till farming practices and can reduce the need for more toxic herbicides on farms. For homeowners and land managers, it is a favored tool for controlling invasive plants, aiding the restoration of native plant species diversity.

The Anniston bus station was the site of the first attack on the Freedom Riders in May 1961. In 2007, the community had never acknowledged it, despite having the intact bus station and surrounding area that looked exactly as it had that day. Ms. Bean will share her experience of trying to please white Annistonians and black Annistonians as the 50th anniversary of the rides approached.
