Fertility rates have been declining in the U.S. and abroad for several decades—from the post-war Baby Boom to an unprecedented fertility low. The depth of the current decline is greater than demographers had anticipated, and if it continues, will force changes in important societal institutions like retirement funding. This class will address first, the current dimensions of the decline in fertility and likely causes (there are many), and second, the record of policy successes and failures. During the course of the discussion, the class will consider what should be the goals for policies regarding fertility.

This class examines developmental disabilities and the types of supports needed to ensure quality of life for individuals diagnosed with them. Case studies will be presented and discussed, as well as regulations like IDEA and ADA, funding sources (Medicaid, Katie Beckett, NOW/COMP, Children's Medical Services). Natural resources that can be developed (and obstacles to developing them) will be analyzed. Also, local Athens-area supports that are available will be emphasized, and the class will generate ideas on ways each of us can participate to further support individuals in this special population.

Think you know what happens after the garbage truck leaves your curb? Think again! Join us for an eye-opening journey to uncover the truth about modern landfill operations. The “Dump the Myths Tour” will separate fact from fiction as we explore how today’s modern, engineered landfills protect the environment, recover resources, and manage waste responsibly. Participants will get a behind-the-scenes look at landfill design, daily operations, environmental monitoring systems, and long-term site management. We’ll tackle common myths like “landfills are dumps” and “landfills are just giant holes in the ground,” and reveal the science, technology, and teamwork that make these facilities essential to sustainable waste management.

Athens’ JG Beacham Drinking Water Treatment Plant transforms raw water into clean, great-tasting drinking water, then conveniently delivers it to taps at homes and businesses. This is the only drinking water treatment plant in Athens-Clarke County and provides approximately 14 million gallons to the city daily through a span of 800 miles of pipes. Raw water is sourced from the North Oconee River, Middle Oconee River, and Bear Creek Reservoir. During this tour, you will learn how raw water is processed and how the facilities are maintained by our operators.

Athens has one of the most vibrant and unique downtowns in the Southeast. It is continually reinventing itself through public art to become a creative center that has a huge impact on our community. Downtown's outdoor museum includes the iconic "We Let the Dawgs Out" Bulldawgs; Project Ginkgo lamp post mosaics; murals; and Harold Rittenberry's metal sculptures that tell a story.
